In the mining industry, time is money, precision is vital, and safety is paramount.
That’s why quality assurance processes such as non-destructive testing (NDT) are critical to ensure components are safe, reliable, and meet the highest standards of quality.
In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of NDT in the mining industry and a case study of a recent project for a leading earthmoving equipment manufacturer.
Non destructive testing in the mining industry
By using NDT , mining companies can detect defects and weaknesses in these components before they become a safety hazard or cause costly downtime.
At Australian Waterjet Cutting, we regularly undertake NDT on various size parts.
With waterjet cutting, our team dissects materials and parts for experts to detect defects and failures without heat affected zones (unlike laser). This means you don’t compromise the integrity of what you’re cutting, and the slice is clean, allowing for fair, unaffected testing.
Steering arm NDT for quality assurance processes
In 2022, we were approached by a major earthmoving equipment company to conduct NDT for in-service wear testing.
The component we were given needed to be checked for wear and metal fatigue, and it was our task to find out what level of fatigue and if any failure had occurred.
Initially, we made two cuts to remove a section from the plate. However, after our two cuts it wasn’t clear where the source of the failure was. So, we advised that we should cut the section again into halves.
And we struck gold! We could see signs of delamination in the welding layer that led to the failure of the steering arm.
Despite the hefty 110mm thickness and the part being made of Bisalloy400, our waterjet cutting machine had no issues cutting through the arm.
